Tips for Your Mommy and Me Session

Capturing the tiny moments you want to cherish for years to come.

As a mama, you spend much of your time behind the scenes and behind the lens catching all the precious memories of your children as they grow. And missing out on being in those moments with them. You don’t want your children looking back through pictures and wondering where their mom is in all of them.

This is where the value of Mommy and Me sessions blossomed. Having photos—moments in time—captured in a fun, unforgettable process is why these specific photo sessions have become so popular.

So, let us make the most of your time during your Mommy and Me session. Here are some amazing tips for you on creating your special moment in time.

Planning your Shoot

To have a successful Mommy and Me shoot, you and your babies should be comfortable. Think about the kind of photos you love and your family’s personality. Do you have a theme in mind? Do you want indoor or outdoor photography? Does your family have a calm and peaceful vibe? Or do you love being bright and bold with laughter and fun?

All these scenarios create a vastly different photo shoot, so considering them ahead of time and doing a discovery call with your photographer is important. Mommy and Me sessions are a creative endeavor for your photographer, so give them the information they need and let them work their creative magic.

We want happy, cooperative children for your Mommy and Me Session!

Although photographer love capturing that golden hour lighting, young children may be too sleepy to happily join in the session. Kids’ schedules and adults’ schedules vary differently, and adults are more likely to be able to cooperate for a little while. But once you get a sleepy-eyed child, you will lose them quickly.

As a mama, you know your children best. You know when their patience and energy levels are high and when it is typically nap or bedtime for your littles. Schedule your time so that the best moods are present, and your photographer will make the time of day work—that is just part of their magical gift behind the lens.

Your Wardrobe Should Showcases your Family’s Style

There are different ways you can plan for your Mommy and Me sessions. You can look at this as an opportunity to have a fun, themed session and step out of the box with your style. This could give you a chance for unique memories.

Or, you can keep it simple and casual. Plan a wardrobe that is less-distracting, which leaves more focus on facial expressions and small moments like handholding, giggles, and gentle touches between you and your babies.

Whichever route you choose, when planning your wardrobe make sure to consider the location of your photo shoot. Wearing long, flowy dresses in the middle of the woods may pose its challenges. Or, dressing up to the max in the middle of your kitchen may seem out of place.

Your wardrobe and style should complement the location. If you are unsure, work with your photographer to create a memorable scene. You can even take to Pinterest to look for ideas on styling. Remember, your photographer is the expert behind your Mommy and Me session. Utilizing them for assistance during the planning stages will ensure your shoot goes off without a hitch.

Happy kids Means a Happy Mama, Which Means a Successful Photo Shoot!

You and your photographer have a challenge here: Keep the kids happy and the smiles bountiful. How can you achieve that? Remember that you are working with tiny humans who have a lot of their own demands. Making sure you are prepared for everything will help keep everyone happy and create an environment for a successful shoot.

Here are some of the things you should prepare to bring with to your Mommy and Me session:

  • Small toys to keep children occupied: a board game, a ball, bubbles, a doll, etc.

  • Extra snacks to keep bellies happy and full

  • Water for all for hydration

  • A special item to keep anxious children calm

  • A blanket or portable chair to keep everyone comfortable in between poses

Create Opportunities for Interaction + Everyday Moments with your Photographer

While posed photos always make for beautiful canvases on your wall, so do those normal, everyday moments. Make sure to have a sprinkle of all sorts of pictures taken at your Mommy and Me shoot. After all, life as a mama is not a posed portrait; it is the everyday moments that you cherish the most.

Photographers, especially lifestyle ones, are trained to see moments unfolding before the camera. Those unplanned ones are gold; they showcase you in “mom-mode” and are something you’ll want to look back on for years to come. Smiling and sitting in a pose is nice, but how many times have you comforted your crying toddler? How many times did you smile in joy at the wonder in your child’s eyes? Those are the memories you want stilled for years to come—and those are the moments your photographer will snag in between the others.

Your home may be the perfect setting to get moments of interaction with your children.

Whether you like baking together or playing games, reading stories, or building forts, these are the moments that are priceless. These moments in your home can be captured and saved and displayed for years in the future. Sweet interactions and natural smiles will come out when you take the opportunity to let your family be themselves.

Let me work my magic.

As the woman behind the camera, my goal is to help you capture your untold story. Your Mommy and Me session is a way to make sure you aren’t always the one behind the camera. These photographs will be a welcome addition to your family photos.

Open communication, patience, and planning are important to your successful Mommy and Me session. These moments are fleeting. Take the opportunity to grab them while you can.
